Our supposedly de-sexed puppy may be in season!
We noticed some blood last weekend - thought it might have been a leech but it has continued. Took her to the vet on Friday and he thinks she might be coming into season (she's about the right age for doing it the first time). Either that or she has an infection.
Anyway $400 + later (Bella also had her annual injections) we have got some massive antibiotics to give her and I have to leave her at the vet tomorrow and he will take a swab to see if he can diagnose her problem.
If she hasn't been de-sexed properly (there might be a tiny remnant of ovarian tissue somewhere) she'll need another operation and it could be like looking for a needle in a haystack - Expensive and invasive.

Take her back to the rescue it is their problem.
I have come to the conclusion they do it all the time. Hamish had the back leg problem from a pup and when we went to pick him up he was supposed to be up to date with his injections - we got some sob story about the VET not having time because it was coming up to the New Year. They still charged us the £50 fee and we then had to bring him up-to-date with all his injections.
We loved him to bits and it was lucky we had the money for him, but it was a constant shelling out.
£65 a month for pain killers towards the end. We had him insured but it was a big scam and they only paid out for 1 year.

So what was the verdict??
No verdict yet. Cytology yesterday seems to indicate that she is coming into season but he wanted to take blood samples for progesterone levels to confirm so am awaiting results.
I rang the Dept. Fair Trading though and the man I spoke to said the vet who performed the op. should re-do, or pay for my vet to re-do.
My vet - lovely man, refers to the dogs as people and to Bella and Josie as sisters - said he would speak to the other vet once he was sure what he was dealing with. He said if it was him he'd want to know if things weren't right and be given the chance to rectify things.
Popped in to vets on way home. Blood test confirms elevated progesterone levels and a puppy in season.
Russell (vet) away for a couple of days and me at training Thursday and Friday so won't know much for a while but lady vet says she'll have to be operated on after finished being in season and meanwhile keep her away from undesexed male dogs - ie. garaged.
Good luck Heidi, hope the vet who performed the operation 'plays the white man' and redoes the operation.
Keep us informed!
However, the bottom line is poor Jose. Perhaps another operation and jailed!!

Ian spoke to Russell today and then to the RSPCA who said absolutely they would take care of making it right again.
So Josie is booked in for an operation on Monday with the vet in Leura who did the original op. Russell will get all the info. to the vet so he/she starts from where Russell is at.
The RSPCA said they have been using that vet for 5+ years without anything untoward happening. I think it is just very unfortunate.
That said, one of my friends said that when she was young her family had a cat that needed to be de-sexed THREE times! Haven't told Ian that!
So how do I spend my time? Well, when I am not running Ian to hospital and medical appointments, I am running the dog to hospital and medical appointments . . .
